Before proceeding let’s consider the only three possibilities for America’s population: (1) It can increase, (2) it can stabilize, or (3) it can decrease.
Therefore, it seems to me there are only four positions an American can have regarding America’s population: (1) To want it to increase, (2) to want it to stabilize, (3) to want it to decrease, or (4) to have no position.
In America, of course, the last position--no position--is actually one of condemning future generations of Americans to population increase. |

CHAPTER 12: TREATMENT AND WITHDRAWAL CONTRIBUTE YOUR THINKING
Ask Others: “How Many Are Enough?”
At the beginning of this book I asked you, “How many are enough?” Now, each time a friend or acquaintance--or perhaps someone you have just met--advocates an action which, as a thinking populationist, you know encourages population growth in America, ask that person, “How many people do you think America should have?”
They will probably answer, “I don’t know,” or “I haven’t really thought about it,” or “That’s not the issue.”
Go right after them: “Yes, that is the issue! You are proposing to increase America’s population. You are proposing to push America’s addiction to population growth. Therefore, I would like to know at what point in America’s population growth you will concede enough is enough--for you and for future generations. In other words, how many people do you think America should have? Unless you have an answer to that question, I challenge your right to condemn future Americans to crowded lives of diminished quality!”
By getting just one more person--a friend or an acquaintance--to begin thinking about America’s addiction to population growth, you have made a significant contribution toward America’s withdrawal and recovery. |
