THE AUTHOR
A native Californian, a businessman, a homeowner, a taxpayer, and an environmentalist, Edward C. Hartman, author of The Population Fix, has observed the effects of rampant population growth on the nation's most populous state. A new role as a grandfather in 1996 led him to question the underlying causes of the state's failing fortunes and declining quality of life for its citizens and for future generations.
Since 1997, Mr. Hartman has been gathering data and using his skills of inquiry, analysis, and political savvy--honed over years in corporate and entrepreneurial positions--to write on the topics of resource constraints, carrying capacity, immigration policy, American media orientation, and ultimately population growth. In 2001, his website, www.ThinkPopulation.org, introduced the Population-Environment Scorecard, the first published document recording how well the leading environmental organizations make the connection between human population growth and environmental degradation.
Recognizing his native state as part of a larger problem, Mr. Hartman has broadened his focus from California to America at large. The resulting book connects the dots between America's environmental and societal problems and the nation's addiction to population growth. Ultimately, The Population Fix provides a road map to recovery.
Edward C. Hartman spent 28 years in the telecommunications industry and runs his own financial services business. He received his MBA and BA from California universities. He lives with his wife in the San Francisco Bay Area where they enjoy reading, bird watching, hiking, traveling, and native plant gardening. He has two children and four grandchildren.
