You are likely to hear white flag flyers say, “America's population growth is inevitable! It can't be stopped because we can't stop the poor and oppressed of the world from sneaking into America in search of better lives. As someone once wrote, “When you hear someone say something is inevitable, you know you are dealing with ideology, not reason.” To take one example: “No matter how many border patrol agents we put on our borders, we can never keep out people who want to get into America.” Well, yes and no... |

CHAPTER 11: THE ENABLERS NON-GOVERNMENT
White Flag Flyers
There may always be ways for some illegal aliens to get into America if they really want to, but that doesn't mean border enforcement is a failure. Just as important as border patrolling is interior enforcement, e.g., prosecuting employers of illegal aliens. Common sense tells us fewer illegal aliens will want to enter America, if they find they have no paying jobs when they arrive. Border enforcement and interior enforcement are equally important--and America has not exercised both simultaneously for many years.
Speaking of exercise: Border enforcement without interior enforcement is similar to a person trying to improve his physique by dieting, but without exercising, or by exercising but continuing to eat excessive amounts of food. We know neither approach is likely to work. Nevertheless, all the white flag flyers tell us we can't enforce border security, but neglect to tell us that some of the most important “border enforcement” work is not done at the borders.
The white flag flyers want us to believe we should eliminate logical immigration laws, because enforcing them is impossible. As Heather Mac Donald wrote: “Advocates for amnesty argue that it [amnesty] is the only solution to the illegal alien crisis, because enforcement clearly has not worked. They are wrong in their key assumption: Enforcement has never been tried. Amnesty, however, has been tried--in both an industrial-strength version in 1986, and in more limited doses ever since--and it was a clear failure. Before we proceed again to the ultimate suspension of the nation's self-definition, it is long past time to make immigration law a reality, not a charade.” |
