population growth
“OK, Ed,” you might say, “now that I understand the causes of population growth and now that I know something about the producers, pushers, enablers, and especially about the addicts and victims of America’s addiction to population growth, how do I think like a populationist?”

CONTRIBUTE THINKING

It’s easy. Think population! That’s it. That’s all there is to it. Every time you hear about, read about, or think about a world, national, regional, state, or local problem, think population! Think, “Will this problem be easier to mitigate or more difficult to mitigate if population continues to grow?”

Not so long ago, there was a fellow who wanted permission to float blimp-like rubber containers filled with Northern California water down the California coast to alleviate Southern California’s water shortage. Really, I’m not making this up!

How might a populationist look at this story? Rather than getting tangled up in the legal and logistic complications, a populationist might ask, “Who allowed tens of millions of people to inhabit a semiarid part of Western America.” Without being distracted by all the ins and outs and controversies of this fantastic scheme and its endless court battles, a populationist would ask, “Will this water shortage problem be easier to mitigate or more difficult to mitigate if population continues to grow in Southern California?”

After you become adept at thinking like a populationist, encourage friends and acquaintances to do the same. You might begin by referring them to this website or by lending or giving them a copy of The Population Fix. And each time a friend or acquaintance--or perhaps someone you have just met--advocates an action which, as a thinking populationist, you know encourages population growth in America, ask that person, “How many people do you think America should have?” By getting just one more person--a friend or an acquaintance--to begin thinking about America’s addiction to population growth, you will have made a significant contribution toward America’s withdrawal and recovery.
