CHAPTER 3: THE ADDICTION
Why "Addiction?"

A parent smokes tobacco and says, “I know it’s bad for my health. I know it makes my clothes smell bad. I know it sets a bad example for our children and may even be bad for their health. I know it’s a sad waste of money. But I can’t stop!”

We could substitute “alcohol” for “tobacco” or we could substitute more destructive drugs such as “heroin” or “morphine” or “methamphetamine” and the negatives would be similar, “I know it’s bad,” and the conclusion the same, “But I can’t stop.”

Addicts know what they are doing is bad for themselves and bad for others--but they can’t stop! They may deny they are addicted--but they can’t stop! Their worlds may be imploding around them and they see it happening--but they can’t stop!

America’s addiction to population growth is like that. We know--if we take a moment to think about it--none of the problems we face today as a nation or within our states and communities will be easier to solve if we continue to increase our population--but we can’t stop!

Presidential and Congressional commissions, academic committees, and intelligence community reports have consistently warned of the dangers of perpetual population growth. Yet we can’t seem to stop ourselves. We can’t seem to stop our legislators. We can’t seem to stop our officials from doing things which ensure our population will continue to grow, thereby making our societal problems that much more difficult to solve.
